What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) is a health profession which aims to help individuals to achieve independence in all facets of their lives. This can include things like getting dressed, preparing a meal, working at a job, attending school, and enjoying time with family or friends. Occupational therapists use careful analysis of physical, environmental, psychosocial, mental, and cultural factors to identify barriers to occupation.
OT and physical therapy (PT) are similar, except that OT also focuses on lifestyle changes and managing a client's health through non-physical means, while PT focuses more on curing the actual injury and preventing re-injury. Rehabilitation science is the general term for both PT and OT, and some schools use this term instead.
